Everybody is playing the ukulele these days, it seems, and here’s your opportunity to join the craze.  Somehow, it is impossible to be glum while playing the ukulele – maybe because the instrument is just so darned cute!  It’s also very easy to play.  In this class, you’ll learn a full repertoire of basic chords, a variety of strum patterns (along with a couple of tricks), some music basics like reading charts and transposing keys, and a range of songs, from folk songs & novelty songs, to Tin Pan Alley and doo-wop.  Some loaner ukes available.

After the class students are invited to attend an informal jam session, which begins at 4:00 pm.

Martha Tyner hails from central Illinois where she has been playing traditional music of various sorts since her high school days, starting with guitar and autoharp performances as a duo with her sister, later as bass player in the Stringtown Road bluegrass band and the Allen Street String Band and guitarist in the Tater Patch String Band. Currently she is concertmaster and mandola player in the Orpheus Mandolin Orchestra, leads a church chime choir, and teaches ukulele and guitar classes at the Town of Normal Adult Recreation Center. For 30 years, Martha has also been a contra and square dance caller, leading dances and conducting workshops throughout the Midwest and at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, WV. For the past couple of years, Martha has become increasingly enthusiastic about the ukulele (as has much of the rest of the world!) and especially enjoys sharing that enthusiasm with others.
