Nancy Odalen’s journey in the study of Rosemaling began with her first Vesterheim Rosemaling class in 2001 in Decorah Iowa. Odalen has taken, and continues to take classes from instructors that have given generously of their time and talents to instruct her in various styles found in the Norwegian art of Rosemaling. Most notably, Odalen worked with Andrea Herkert, Vesterheim Gold Medalist (VGM), in two apprenticeship the first in 2013-2014 and the second in 2018-2019. These apprenticeships offered her the opportunity to focus on the Ryfylke, Agder, Hallingdal and Telemark styles of Rosemaling.

Odalen has taught Rosemaling Classes beginning as early as 2007 at Madison Area Technical College (MATC), and the Wisconsin State Rosemaling Association.  She taught at Vesterheim Folk Art School in 2018 and for the Western Rosemaling Association in 2019. Most recently Odalen has been teaching through the Sons of Norway-Mandt Lodge and has just completed teaching a class at the Wisconsin State Rosemaling in the Agder style of Rosemaling. Odalen entered the Vesterheim National Folk Art Exhibition and received a 2nd place in 2016 for a box, 1st place and Best of Show on a Kransekake carrier in 2017 and a 2nd place for a box and an Honorable Mention for a Tine in 2019, all these pieces were completed in the Ryfylke style.  Odalen is one point away from achieving her Vesterheim Gold Medal. Odalen states that her passion and strength lie in painting Ryfylke, Agder and Hallingdal, and that her journey continues as she learns from the old, creates pieces that come from her soul and shares her knowledge with those whom she teaches.
