Visible mending is an approach to repairing clothing and reducing textile waste that highlights the mending process rather than attempting to hide the mends. In this workshop you’ll learn methods to repair and add new character to your clothing and household textiles.
First we will learn how to add patches to our garments and cover small stains with simple embroidery stitches and techniques. Then in the second half of the class we’ll explore darning, a technique for patching holes in knit textiles or where a patch would be uncomfortable.
Participants should bring textiles to mend such as socks, jeans, shirts, sweaters, tablecloths, or any other textiles you wish to try repairing. You may also wish to bring fabric for patching if you want to use a certain color or weight of fabric. Patching fabric will also be provided.

Students need to bring the following supplies:   Students should bring textiles to mend. Students may wish to bring fabric scissors, thread snips, and fabric for patching.

Materials fee: (To be collected directly from students by instructor in class): $10

Kelli Emerson developed an interest for stitching while working at a needle arts supply company in college. She learned the intricacies of needle arts from a mentor at the company, exploring hand embroidery and cross-stitch techniques. While living overseas during Covid-19 lockdowns she took up daily stitching as a creative and calming outlet.  Kelli appreciates the organic nature of embroidery, finding joy in creating forms from thread.

Kelli is also the Program Manager for Folklore Village.
