This class will be a quick experiment with nice results, for a taste of dyeing with plant-based dyes. Using foraged plants or extracts, we will “play” with our pre-mordanted cotton bandannas in small vessels (quart canning jars) after using some simple shibori work to put patterns in our pieces. We can also experiment with combining dyes to expand our color choices. We will have a discussion of safe and effective dye practice, best practice for good results, and explore possibilities for foraging for local dyestuffs.
Students need to bring the following supplies:
Apron, sturdy shoes, basic sewing supplies (scissors, ruler, thimble if used, needles and pins); reading glasses, if needed.
Materials fee: (To be collected directly from students by instructor in class): $15.00 to cover dyestuffs and pre-mordanted items to dye, plus use of some shibori objects, needles, and threads.
Kipp Inglis has been a dyer for 30 years, and switched over to plant dyes for the last 12 years. She has been working with sewing and textiles for more than 60 years.
